India Has the Chip Talent. Who Owns the Product? — Binoy Oommen

A chip-design practitioner on India's talent, NVIDIA's software advantage, AI-assisted verification, and why better engineering starts with asking why.

A country can help design the world’s chips and still have little control over the products it builds. That distinction sits at the heart of this AI Vey conversation: what would it take for India’s semiconductor talent to turn into companies, products and decisions of its own?

Our guest, Binoy Oommen, works in electronic design automation at Siemens EDA. He began his semiconductor career at Mentor Graphics and has spent much of it in functional verification: checking whether a chip design behaves as intended.

We begin with cars, transistors and the extraordinary compounding behind modern computers. Then we ask why NVIDIA’s advantage extends beyond its chips, where India fits into the semiconductor industry, and whether AI could help Indian engineers build verification products of their own.
